"What is the Islamic dua before sleeping?"
The primary bedtime dua is: 'Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya' — O Allah, in Your name I die and I live. Sleep in Islam is considered a minor death — a nightly return to Allah's care. Accompanied by Ayatul Kursi, the Three Quls, and the Tasbih of Fatima, this forms the complete Sunnah sleep dua practice.
In Islamic understanding, every sleep is a minor death — a momentary surrender of consciousness to Allah's care. When you make dua before sleeping, you are not just asking for good rest. You are saying: I give myself back to You tonight. Whatever You will for me is what I accept.
This is why the Prophet ﷺ treated the bedtime duas so seriously — they were not formalities. They were the nightly renewal of trust between the believer and their Creator.
Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya
"O Allah, in Your name I die and I live."
Sahih al-Bukhari 6324 — The first dua upon going to sleep. Acknowledge the surrender.
Allahumma aslamtu nafsi ilayk, wa fawwadtu amri ilayk, wa wajjahtu wajhi ilayk, wa alja'tu zahri ilayk
"O Allah, I have submitted my soul to You, entrusted my affairs to You, turned my face toward You, and placed my back against You."
Sahih al-Bukhari 247 — The dua of complete surrender before sleep. If you die in this state, you die on the fitrah.
Allahumma qini 'adhabaka yawma tab'athu 'ibadak
"O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your servants."
Abu Dawud 5045 — Said three times before sleeping. A profound act of humility and hope.
The Sunnah position. Right hand under right cheek. This is the position the Prophet ﷺ always slept in.
An angel guardian remains with you until morning. Read slowly — do not rush. Each word is protection.
Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas. Recite each surah, then blow gently into your palms. Wipe over your face, then your body, three times. This was the Prophet's ﷺ unwavering practice.
SubhanAllah × 33, Alhamdulillah × 33, Allahu Akbar × 34. The Prophet ﷺ gave this to Fatimah رضي الله عنها when she asked for a servant — and said it was better.
End with your personal needs — then the final dua of return to Allah. Close your eyes in that state of surrender.
Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die during their sleep.
Surah Az-Zumar 39:42 — Sleep is Allah holding your soul. You return every morning only because He returns it.

The most important duas before sleep include: 'Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya' (O Allah, in Your name I die and I live) — said upon sleeping; Ayatul Kursi (2:255) for protection; the Three Quls × 3 blown into palms; and 'Allahumma qini 'adhabak yawma tab'athu 'ibadak' (O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your servants) — said three times.
(O Allah, the stars have set, the eyes have rested, and You are the Ever-Living, the Sustainer. O Allah, quieten my night and rest my eyes.) This is a dua specifically for sleep onset.
Upon waking: 'Alhamdulillahilladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana wa ilayhin-nushur' — All praise is to Allah who gave us life after having taken it from us, and unto Him is the resurrection. This dua reframes waking up as a gift and sets the intention for the day as one of gratitude.
Yes — it is an established, consistent Sunnah. The Prophet ﷺ never slept without reciting specific duas and surahs. Aisha رضي الله عنها narrated that he would recite the Three Quls every night, and he said whoever recites Ayatul Kursi before sleeping will be protected by an angel until morning. (Bukhari)
